If your teeth have become severely stained or discolored, you may opt for teeth whitening. The first step in the teeth whitening process is to book an appointment with your dentist. The dentist will examine your teeth to determine which whitening option suits you.
There are a variety of dental whitening treatments, and not all of them are done at the dental office. You can be given all the teeth whitening materials so you can lighten your teeth at the convenience of your home.
If you have already been given a take-home dental whitening kit and are unsure how to use it, this blog is for you. Keep reading to understand how to effectively use teeth whitening trays at home.
When you visit a dental office, Dr. Navaneetha Natchimuthu will take impressions and models of your teeth and send them to a dental lab where your custom trays will be created. Once the trays are ready, you will pick them along with whitening materials and instructions on how to prep your teeth and apply the trays.
These instructions may include brushing and flossing your teeth beforehand. Ensure your teeth are clean and free from food particles before placing the trays.
Use the provided syringe to apply just a small amount of gel in the tooth tray to prevent the solution from seeping into the gums. A single drop on each tooth on the tray should be enough.
After applying the gel, you should firmly place the tray over the teeth and ensure it’s in place. When the gel interacts with saliva, it will start to foam. The solution should stick within the tray, but if it leaks, use a clean cloth to clean it to avoid gum irritation.
Like most bleaching products, the whitening gel has a time limit for how long it should be worn. You should wear the gel for the directed time limit.
Gels with a high peroxide concentration should not be worn for extended periods. And you should take off your trays early if you experience any burning or tooth sensitivity. Contact our office if these symptoms persist.
You are encouraged to clean all the gel from the trays before storing them for the next use. Also, recap the syringe and store it along with the remaining gel in a cool place. Remember that you can use the same syringe for up to four treatments.
